Frequently asked questions
Straight answers about USDOT, MC authority and filings.
What is the difference between a USDOT number and MC authority?
A USDOT number identifies your company with FMCSA for safety and compliance. MC (Motor Carrier) authority is the operating authority that lets a for-hire carrier haul regulated freight across state lines. Many for-hire interstate carriers need both.
Why was my USDOT number deactivated, and can it be reactivated?
The most common reason is a missed biennial MCS-150 update. In most cases the number can be reactivated by filing a complete, accurate update. We review your record first and tell you what is required.
Does reactivating my USDOT erase my previous record?
No. Safety and compliance history stays attached to the USDOT number. Reactivation restores the number so you can operate; it does not clear past inspections, crashes or violations. Anyone who promises to erase a record is not being honest with you.
How long does it take to get MC authority?
We prepare and file your application quickly, but FMCSA controls the review and protest period, which commonly takes several weeks. Insurance and BOC-3 filings must be on record before authority is granted.
